Workshop: Access to science & scholarship

Unlocking the Doors to Scientific Exploration and Discovery

At Stanley Park High School, we believe that access to science and scholarship is a fundamental right for all students. In today’s rapidly evolving world, where knowledge and innovation drive progress, it’s crucial that our community has the tools and resources to engage with the latest advancements in research and academic discourse.

That’s why we’re excited to host a special workshop focused on enhancing access to science and scholarship. This comprehensive event will delve into the key challenges and emerging solutions surrounding open research, data sharing, and the future of scholarly communication.

Embracing the Open Science Movement

The world of scientific research is undergoing a transformative shift towards greater openness and transparency. This “open science” movement aims to make research findings, data, and methodologies more accessible to the public, fostering collaboration and accelerating the pace of discovery.

As the January 2026 implementation date for the new Office of Science and Technology Policy’s public access requirements approaches, it’s crucial that we understand the implications and opportunities of these changes. How can we ensure that current and future policies lead to the most effective and trustworthy ways to share research? What are the potential impacts on the research process, and how can we develop a research agenda to inform the development of new policies and practices?

These are the kinds of questions that will be at the heart of our workshop, as we bring together a diverse group of experts to discuss the evolving landscape of scholarly communication.

Exploring the Changing Landscape of Scholarly Publishing

One of the key areas we’ll be exploring is the transformation of the scholarly publishing industry. Subscription-based models are being supplanted by various open access frameworks, and these new approaches are reshaping the availability and dissemination of research.

We’ll examine the sustainability of different publishing models, from traditional journal subscriptions to emerging open access frameworks. We’ll also consider the impacts on market dynamics, and the balance between larger commercial publishers, research societies, and independent/university presses.

Discussions will focus on the challenges and opportunities presented by these changes, with the goal of identifying strategies to ensure that the research community can effectively navigate the evolving publishing landscape.

Ensuring Robust Data Management and Curation

Research data are the cornerstone of the scientific method, and their availability, curation, and storage are crucial for scientific progress. As data volumes and complexity continue to grow, we’ll explore the current practices and policies around data access, curation, and storage.

Are existing frameworks adequate in the face of these challenges? What are the real costs and benefits of data-sharing policies? How can we develop robust, scalable infrastructures to support data sharing and ensure the integrity of scientific findings?

By addressing these critical issues, we aim to equip our community with the knowledge and tools to effectively manage and leverage research data, enhancing the transparency and utility of scientific discoveries.

Reimagining the Peer Review Process

Peer review is the bedrock of quality assurance in scholarly publishing, but as science evolves towards more open and transparent practices, the peer review process itself is also undergoing transformation.

We’ll explore emerging models of peer review, including the use of preprints, which can accelerate the dissemination of research but also raise questions about quality control. We’ll also consider the potential for crowd-sourced and post-publication review, as well as the integration of technology to streamline the review process.

By understanding the changing landscape of peer review, we can ensure that the research community retains its commitment to rigorous, unbiased assessment while also embracing the benefits of greater openness and collaboration.

Strengthening the Digital Infrastructure for Scholarship

The digital revolution has profoundly impacted the way we communicate and share scientific knowledge. As we delve deeper into the digital era, the infrastructure underpinning scholarly communication becomes increasingly vital.

We’ll examine the current state of this infrastructure, including digital repositories, scholarly databases, and communication networks. What are the requirements for a robust, secure, and flexible infrastructure that can support the diverse open science needs of researchers, librarians, and publishers?

By addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by this evolving digital landscape, we can empower our community to leverage the latest technological advancements in support of open, collaborative, and impactful scholarship.

Unlocking the Future of Open Science

In the final panel of the day, we’ll reflect on the insights and suggestions presented throughout the workshop, exploring the horizon for open science. What are the next steps? What can be done to support better, data-driven policies and practices to improve the value, speed, and reliability of scientific research?

We’ll also consider the policy implications, funding mechanisms, and international collaborations needed to support a sustainable and inclusive open science ecosystem. By identifying these opportunities and strategies, we can chart a course towards a future where access to science and scholarship is truly universal.
