Discover the Joys of Eco-Printing and Natural Dyeing
Eco-printing and natural dyeing are two exciting techniques that allow us to harness the beauty of nature and transform it into stunning works of art. Led by renowned artist and educator Louise Upshall, our students will embark on a journey of exploration, learning how to capture the essence of plants on paper.
Through Louise’s simple and practical methods, our students will learn to create bright, clear prints that celebrate the natural world. They’ll discover the joy of mindful nature connection, using eco-printing and natural dyeing to express their creativity in a sustainable and eco-friendly way.
“Eco-printing and natural dyeing doesn’t have to be mysterious or complicated. It can be simple, eco-friendly and joyful!” – Louise Upshall
Our students will have the opportunity to experiment with various plant materials, uncovering the magic of eco-printing and the vibrant colors that can be achieved through natural dyeing. By understanding the variables and techniques involved, they’ll be able to confidently create their own stunning works of art, rooted in the beauty of the natural world.
Embracing the Process of Styrofoam Printmaking
In addition to the wonders of eco-printing and natural dyeing, our students will also dive into the captivating world of styrofoam printmaking. This accessible and affordable technique allows our young artists to explore the art of printmaking without the need for a printing press.
Under the guidance of experienced art educator Sierra Machado, our students will learn the step-by-step process of creating their own unique prints. From drawing their designs on paper to carefully carving into the styrofoam, they’ll develop a deep appreciation for the art of printmaking and the importance of the process.
“There is such a fun energy in the room and I love putting students in charge of the stations. I set up four stations in the back of my classroom using two folding tables (or extra desks if I have them) covered in newspaper.” – Sierra Machado
As our students work through the various stages of styrofoam printmaking, they’ll learn valuable lessons about patience, attention to detail, and the power of perseverance. Through this hands-on experience, they’ll not only create stunning prints but also develop a deeper understanding of the art of printmaking.
Exploring the Harlem Renaissance through Printmaking
Printmaking is not just a technical skill, but a means of artistic expression that can be deeply rooted in history and culture. In this workshop, we’ll take our students on a journey through the vibrant and influential Harlem Renaissance, using printmaking as a lens to explore this pivotal moment in American art history.
Drawing inspiration from the work of renowned artists like Romare Bearden and Faith Ringgold, our students will delve into the themes, styles, and stories that defined the Harlem Renaissance. Through the creation of their own printmaking pieces, they’ll connect with the rich artistic legacy of this era, gaining a deeper understanding of the social and cultural significance of this movement.
“There is something powerful about hearing Black voices describe in song what segregation looked like in our not-so-distant past.” – Sierra Machado
By weaving the history and cultural significance of the Harlem Renaissance into our printmaking workshop, we aim to inspire our students to not only hone their artistic skills but also develop a deeper appreciation for the role of art in shaping and reflecting societal change.
