Harnessing the Power of Drones: Aerial Robotics and Drone Technology Workshops

Revolutionizing Land Surveying with Drone LiDAR

In the rapidly evolving world of technology, one field that has been transformed is land surveying. Traditionally, surveyors have relied on manual, point-by-point data collection methods, which can be time-consuming, dangerous, and may not capture the full complexity of the terrain. However, the emergence of drone-based Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology has revolutionized the way we approach land surveying.

At the forefront of this innovation is Harrison Knoll, the CEO of ROCK Robotic and the host of the popular YouTube channel, Indiana Drones. Knoll, with his background in physics, engineering, and business, has been a passionate advocate for the advantages of drone LiDAR in land surveying.

“The ROCK R3 Pro LiDAR system excels in all these areas, making it an excellent choice for land surveying,” Knoll explains. “It offers high accuracy, a high point density, a long range, and it’s lightweight and compact. Plus, it comes with ROCK Cloud for easy data processing and analysis, and we offer excellent customer support and training.”

One of the key benefits of drone LiDAR is its ability to capture hundreds of millions of data points per second, providing a much more detailed and comprehensive 3D representation of the land. This not only increases the quality of the data but also significantly reduces the time spent in the field. Furthermore, the ROCK R3 Pro LiDAR system can achieve impressive levels of accuracy, with vertical accuracy down to 3 cm and horizontal accuracy down to 5 cm.

“In comparison, traditional land surveying methods, such as total stations or GPS, can also achieve high levels of accuracy,” Knoll says. “However, the key difference lies in the efficiency and data density. Traditional methods require manual, point-by-point data collection, which can be time-consuming, may not capture the full complexity of the terrain and can be very dangerous. On the other hand, drone LiDAR can capture a wealth of data in a fraction of the time, making it a highly cost-effective solution for land surveying.”

The advantages of drone LiDAR technology are not limited to just land surveying. Knoll envisions a broad application of LiDAR across multiple sectors, from agriculture and construction to public safety and emergency response. “With ROCK Cloud, you can easily process and analyze your LiDAR data, further enhancing the accuracy and usefulness of the information,” he says. “This opens up a world of possibilities for businesses and organizations looking to harness the power of aerial robotics and drone technology.”

Integrating Drones and AI: A Powerful Partnership

The power of drone technology is further amplified when combined with the intelligence of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing. This is precisely the focus of a strategic partnership between DJI, the world’s leader in civilian drones and aerial imaging technology, and Microsoft.

“As computing becomes ubiquitous, the intelligent edge is emerging as the next technology frontier,” says Scott Guthrie, Executive Vice President of the Cloud and Enterprise Group at Microsoft. “DJI is the leader in commercial drone technology, and Microsoft Azure is the preferred cloud for commercial businesses. Together, we are bringing unparalleled intelligent cloud and Azure IoT capabilities to devices on the edge, creating the potential to change the game for multiple industries spanning agriculture, public safety, construction and more.”

Through this partnership, DJI is releasing a software development kit (SDK) for Windows that extends the power of commercial drone technology to the largest enterprise developer community in the world. Using applications written for Windows 10 PCs, DJI drones can be customized and controlled for a wide variety of industrial uses, with full flight control and real-time data transfer capabilities.

“DJI is excited to form this unique partnership with Microsoft to bring the power of DJI aerial platforms to the Microsoft developer ecosystem,” says Roger Luo, President at DJI. “Using our new SDK, Windows developers will soon be able to employ drones, AI and machine learning technologies to create intelligent flying robots that will save businesses time and money, and help make drone technology a mainstay in the workplace.”

One example of this powerful integration is the Microsoft FarmBeats solution, which aggregates and analyzes data from aerial and ground sensors using AI models running on Azure IoT Edge. With DJI drones, the Microsoft FarmBeats solution can take advantage of advanced sensors to detect heat, light, moisture and more, providing unique visual insights into crops, animals and soil on the farm.

“This partnership is an example of the important role IP plays in ensuring a healthy and vibrant technology ecosystem,” Guthrie adds. “It builds upon existing partnerships in emerging sectors such as connected cars and personal wearables, showcasing the immense potential of combining drone technology with the intelligence of the cloud.”
