Embracing Global Perspectives: Interdisciplinary International Studies Minor

Exploring the World Beyond Our Borders

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, it’s more important than ever for our students to develop a global perspective. At Stanley Park High School, we’re proud to offer an Interdisciplinary International Studies Minor that empowers our pupils to navigate the complexities of our global society.

This comprehensive program allows students to gain hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge to thrive in our ever-changing world. By studying diverse cultures, economies, and political systems, our pupils learn to embrace the rich diversity of our planet. They’ll also develop essential skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, and cross-cultural communication – assets that will serve them well in their future endeavors.

Diverse Concentrations, Endless Opportunities

The Interdisciplinary International Studies Minor at Stanley Park High School offers eight distinct concentrations, each designed to cater to our students’ unique interests and aspirations. Whether you’re fascinated by the vibrant cultures of East and Southeast Asia, the shifting political landscapes of Europe, or the complex development challenges facing the Global South, there’s a concentration to capture your imagination.

Explore the Continent of Africa

Look beyond common stereotypes and gain a deeper understanding of the second most populous region of the world. In this concentration, students will examine Africa’s rich pre-colonial history, the complex legacy of colonialism, and the continent’s abundant resources and potential, as well as the enduring challenges it faces. By delving into the cultural, political, and economic dynamics of this diverse region, our pupils will develop a more nuanced perspective on the African continent.

Unravel the Complexities of East and Southeast Asia

Located at the crossroads of cultural and economic interactions, the East and Southeast Asia region offers a fascinating study. From the religious practices and forms of governance that vary across the region to the dynamic natural environments, students in this concentration will explore the heterogeneous ethnic, political, and cultural composition of this vibrant part of the world.

Understand the Evolving Landscape of Europe

Europe has been a center of international power for centuries, and its individual nations continue to wield significant global influence. In this concentration, students will examine the profound political and economic transformations that have shaped the continent in the last half-century, including the emergence of the European Union and the challenges it faces, such as transnational migration, monetary integration, and competing political ideologies.

Delve into the Dynamics of Globalization

Globalization has made the world a smaller place while expanding our horizons. In this concentration, students will explore the cultural, social, and economic changes that have accompanied this global integration, as well as the limits of global interconnectedness. They’ll also investigate the role of religion in international settings, ideas of global justice, and the historical antecedents to global organizations.

Examine Global Sustainability and Development

How can we improve the well-being of people around the world and protect the global environment? In this concentration, students will explore the complex dynamics of global trade, international development, and the impact of new technologies in international contexts. They’ll also examine the global politics that affect economies and environments.

Uncover the Rich Tapestry of Latin America

Latin America is a region of sharp contrasts and rich cultural history, with strong Native American, European, and African influences. In this concentration, students will explore the diversity of languages, cultures, and economic realities that characterize this vibrant part of the world.

Delve into South Asia and the Middle East

Extending from the Maldives and Bhutan to Egypt, South Asia and the Middle East (SAME) are home to languages and cultures practiced by more than half of the world’s population. In this concentration, students will look beyond popular stereotypes and misunderstandings to better understand the unique and diverse worldviews of these vital regions.

Immersive Learning Experiences

At the heart of our Interdisciplinary International Studies Minor is a commitment to hands-on, experiential learning. All students in this program are required to participate in a study abroad program, which adds depth and context to their education through sustained engagement with people and communities outside the United States.

“Studying abroad was a truly transformative experience for me,” says Emma, a recent graduate of our Interdisciplinary International Studies Minor. “Not only did I gain a deeper understanding of another culture, but I also learned so much about myself and my place in the world. It’s an opportunity I’d recommend to any student interested in this program.”

In addition to the study abroad requirement, our Interdisciplinary International Studies Minor offers a wealth of other opportunities for our students to engage with the global community. From participating in the International Studies Club, which immerses students in various global issues and cultures, to applying for prestigious scholarships and research grants, our pupils have countless ways to enrich their academic experience.
