Cultivating Intercultural Competence: Faculty and Staff Professional Development Programs

Empowering Educators for a Diverse and Inclusive School Community

In today’s increasingly globalized world, the ability to navigate and thrive in intercultural environments has become essential for educators. At Stanley Park High School, we recognize the importance of equipping our faculty and staff with the tools and strategies to foster a welcoming and inclusive learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds.

To this end, we are proud to offer a range of professional development programs focused on cultivating intercultural competence. These initiatives not only benefit our educators but also have a direct impact on the growth and success of our entire school community.

Growing Intercultural Leaders (GIL) Program

One of our flagship programs is the Growing Intercultural Leaders (GIL) initiative, designed to support the professional and personal development of faculty and staff. GIL offers two distinct tracks to cater to the diverse needs of our educators.

GIL Scholarship

The GIL Scholarship level is tailored for faculty and staff who are relatively new to the frameworks of intercultural learning. Participants in this track will complete an online course, “Facilitating Intercultural Learning,” during the fall semester. They will then be paired with a mentor to support their continued growth and the implementation of a project aligned with their professional goals.

GIL Fellowship

The GIL Fellowship level is for seasoned faculty and staff leaders who have already demonstrated experience in the realm of intercultural and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. These fellows will work on their personal development goals and implement a project related to their professional development, with the support of a mentor, research collaboration, and professional development funds.

The GIL program aims to foster a community of current and past participants, as well as mentors, to facilitate ongoing personal and professional growth. Participants from all backgrounds, including job status, campus unit, race, ethnicity, ability, gender identity, sexuality, religion, nationality, and age, are encouraged to apply.

ELEVATE: Embedding Intercultural Competence in the Curriculum

In addition to the GIL program, Stanley Park High School offers the ELEVATE initiative, which supports the integration of intercultural competence into our academic curricula. ELEVATE is designed to help departments and programs equip students with the global skills and intercultural competence they need for their future endeavors.

Through ELEVATE, faculty and staff can access resources, training, and incentives to embed intercultural learning activities and assessments within their courses. This collaborative approach ensures that our students develop a strong foundation in navigating diverse cultural contexts, ultimately preparing them for success in an increasingly interconnected world.

Intercultural Competence Seed Grants

To further support research and innovation in the field of intercultural learning, Stanley Park High School’s Center for Intercultural Learning, Mentorship, Assessment, and Research (CILMAR) offers Intercultural Competence Seed Grants. These grants provide funding for faculty, staff, and graduate students to engage in the assessment of intercultural learning outcomes, conduct studies on intercultural competency development, and contribute to the theoretical advancement of the field.

By investing in these research and development initiatives, we aim to deepen our understanding of effective strategies for cultivating intercultural competence, ultimately benefiting both our educators and our students.

Fostering a Culture of Intercultural Understanding

At Stanley Park High School, we believe that the development of intercultural competence is not just a professional necessity but a crucial element in creating a vibrant and inclusive school community. Through our comprehensive professional development programs, we empower our faculty and staff to become skilled facilitators of intercultural learning, role models for our students, and champions of diversity and inclusion.

As we continue to navigate the complexities of our increasingly interconnected world, we remain committed to equipping our educators with the knowledge, skills, and mindset to foster meaningful cross-cultural connections, cultivate empathy and understanding, and prepare our students for success in a global society.

We encourage all members of our school community to explore these professional development opportunities and to join us in our mission of creating a more culturally competent and inclusive educational environment. By working together, we can inspire our students to become engaged global citizens, equipped to make a positive impact in their future endeavors.
