Organizations like Empowered Parents in Community (EPiC) have pioneered this approach, working tirelessly to cultivate parent leadership and improve family engagement in Durham, North Carolina.
EPiC’s mission is to dismantle systemic racial inequities in education by intentionally engaging Black parents and empowering them through collective organization. By providing training, resources, and support, EPiC has helped parents become confident advocates, driving accountability at all levels to close the educational opportunity gap.
Similarly, the Detroit Public Schools Community District has made parent empowerment a top priority, recognizing that “parents are partners, not the problem.” Through initiatives like the Parent Academy and strategic home visits, the district is actively investing in developing parents’ skills and fostering stronger connections between schools and families.

Empowering parents also means ensuring that their voices are amplified and their feedback is actively incorporated into decision-making processes. DC PAVE, a parent-led organization in Washington, D.C., is a shining example of this approach.
