Cultivating Community Connections: Stanley Park’s Environmental Outreach Events

Fostering Outdoor Engagement and Environmental Stewardship

At Stanley Park High School, we are dedicated to cultivating a strong sense of community and environmental awareness among our students and their families. Through a series of impactful outdoor events and educational initiatives, we aim to connect our school community with the natural wonders of Stanley Park, inspiring a deeper appreciation for the world around us.

Embracing the Great Outdoors

As part of our commitment to promoting healthy and active lifestyles, Stanley Park High School has partnered with local organizations, such as Outward Bound Adventures and Catalyst Sports, to offer a range of exciting outdoor activities and experiences. These collaborations provide our students and their families with unique opportunities to venture into the great outdoors, explore the natural environment, and connect with their peers in a fun and engaging way.

“I love OBA and I love everyone that’s on it because OBA helps kids and helps families. I was involved because they always treated you like family and you’re always welcome,” shares Dayqian Baker, a member of the Outward Bound Adventures Youth Advisory Council.

These outdoor experiences have had a profound impact on our students, fostering a sense of belonging, personal growth, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world. One Catalyst Sports participant, Maggie Frederick, enthuses, “I have never felt so free! I was so focused on the bike I didn’t get to take the scenery in as much, but I have never felt so close to nature.”

Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion

At Stanley Park High School, we recognize the importance of creating a welcoming and inclusive environment that celebrates the diversity of our community. Our environmental outreach events are designed to be culturally relevant and accessible to students and families from all backgrounds, ensuring that everyone feels a sense of belonging and connection to the natural spaces we explore.

By incorporating the principles of Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education, we strive to create learning experiences that are responsive to the unique cultural perspectives and lived experiences of our students. This approach empowers our community to share their knowledge, traditions, and stories, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the diverse ways in which people connect with the natural world.

Bridging the Outdoor Accessibility Gap

One of the key goals of our environmental outreach efforts is to address the longstanding issue of unequal access to outdoor spaces and recreational opportunities. We understand that many individuals and communities, particularly those from historically underserved or marginalized backgrounds, face barriers to engaging with nature, such as lack of transportation, financial constraints, or a perceived sense of exclusion.

Through our partnerships with organizations like Tennessee RiverLine and the Continental Divide Trail Coalition, we are actively working to remove these barriers and ensure that all members of our school community have the opportunity to experience the health and well-being benefits of spending time in nature.

“Tennessee RiverLine has been instrumental in helping us increase community engagement with river activities and helping forge physical, social, and emotional connections between our community and the river,” says Rena Purdy, Executive Director of the Wayne County Joint Economic and Community Development Board.

Similarly, a community member from Lordsburg, New Mexico, who connected with the Continental Divide Trail Coalition, shares, “I never thought hiking the desert could be so exciting! It was great meeting CDTC and learning about the different plants in my own backyard. Excited to spend some more time out there!”

Amplifying the Voices of the Community

At the heart of our environmental outreach efforts is a deep commitment to empowering our students and their families to become active participants in shaping the future of our local and global environment. We believe that by centering the experiences and perspectives of our community members, we can create more impactful and meaningful programs that truly resonate with the people we serve.

To this end, we have established a Youth Advisory Council, where students from diverse backgrounds come together to share their ideas, provide feedback, and collaborate on the development of our environmental initiatives. This inclusive approach ensures that the voices of our young people are heard and their needs are reflected in the design and implementation of our outreach events.

Strengthening the Connection Between Nature and Health

Numerous studies have demonstrated the profound impact that access to nature can have on individual and community health and well-being. At Stanley Park High School, we are committed to amplifying this research and incorporating it into our environmental outreach efforts.

Through our partnership with the Center for Nature and Health at the University of California, San Francisco, we are able to provide our community with evidence-based insights and practical strategies for harnessing the health benefits of spending time in nature. As Dr. Nooshin Razani, the Center’s Director, explains, “Taking the time for self-care outside is a critical component of overall health.”

By fostering a deeper understanding of the connection between nature and health, we aim to inspire our students and families to make outdoor engagement a regular part of their lives, thereby promoting physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
