Empowering Students to Become Theatre Creators
Theatre has long been a powerful medium for self-expression, storytelling, and community building. At Stanley Park High School, we believe in nurturing the creative potential of our students and providing them with opportunities to become active participants in the artistic process. One such opportunity is our student-directed devised theatre performance, a unique and transformative experience that allows students to unleash their imaginations and bring their own theatrical visions to life.
What is Devised Theatre?
Devised theatre is a collaborative form of theatre-making where the script and production are generated through a group process, rather than starting with a pre-written play. This approach empowers students to become theatre creators, exploring their own ideas, experiences, and perspectives to develop original performances.
Unlike traditional theatre productions where the director and design team bring a playwright’s vision to the stage, devised theatre is a highly interactive and organic process. Students work together to generate content, devise the structure and narrative, and make creative decisions about design, staging, and performance.
The Student-Directed Devised Theatre Process
At Stanley Park High School, our student-directed devised theatre program is a culmination of the skills and techniques our students have honed throughout their drama studies. Over the course of several months, a group of student directors, actors, designers, and technicians collaborate to bring their own unique theatrical piece to life.
The process begins with an exploration of various devising methodologies and a deep dive into the work of influential theatre-makers like Keith Johnstone, Viola Spolin, and Phelim McDermott. Students learn how to tap into their own creativity, challenge assumptions, and develop innovative approaches to storytelling.
Through a series of workshops and discussions, the ensemble identifies a central theme or concept that resonates with them. They then engage in a process of collective brainstorming, improvisation, and research to generate the raw material for their performance.
As the piece starts to take shape, the student directors take the lead, guiding the ensemble through the creative decisions that will bring their vision to the stage. This includes everything from crafting the narrative structure and developing characters to designing the lighting, sound, and visual elements.
The Power of Student-Directed Devised Theatre
The student-directed devised theatre program at Stanley Park High School is a transformative experience that empowers our students to become active collaborators and creative leaders in the theatre-making process. Here are just a few of the ways this program enriches our students’ learning and personal growth:
Cultivating Creativity and Imagination
Devised theatre encourages students to tap into their innate creativity and imagination. By starting with a blank canvas, students are free to explore unconventional ideas, experiment with different theatrical forms, and push the boundaries of what’s possible on stage.
Developing Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills
The devising process requires students to think critically, analyze information, and make strategic decisions to bring their vision to life. Whether they’re grappling with narrative structures, character development, or technical challenges, students learn to approach problems creatively and collaboratively.
Fostering Teamwork and Communication
Devised theatre is inherently a collaborative endeavor. Students learn to communicate effectively, listen actively, and work together to achieve a common goal. This not only strengthens their interpersonal skills but also helps them develop a deeper appreciation for the collective effort required to create live theatre.
Building Confidence and Leadership
As student directors, our participants take on the responsibility of guiding their ensemble through the creative process. This experience helps them develop confidence in their abilities, hone their leadership skills, and, perhaps most importantly, recognize the value of their own ideas and artistic perspectives.
Exploring Personal and Social Issues
Devised theatre provides a platform for students to explore themes and issues that are important to them, whether it’s personal experiences, social justice concerns, or broader societal challenges. By giving voice to their own stories and perspectives, students can create work that is meaningful and impactful.

Unleashing the Imagination: Inspiring Stories from Stanley Park High School
Crafting a Captivating Narrative Through Collaboration
When the student ensemble at Stanley Park High School decided to explore the theme of “coming of age,” they knew they wanted to create a performance that would resonate with their peers. Through a process of collective brainstorming, research, and improvisation, the group developed a rich tapestry of characters and storylines that explored the joys, challenges, and complexities of growing up.
“It was incredible to see how our different experiences and perspectives came together to shape the narrative,” shared Lila, one of the student directors. “We didn’t start with a pre-written script; instead, we built the story organically, drawing inspiration from our own lives and the lives of those around us.”
The ensemble worked tirelessly, spending countless hours in rehearsals and design sessions, refining the piece and ensuring that every element – from the dialogue to the lighting and sound – worked in harmony to create a captivating and authentic theatrical experience.
“The collaborative nature of the process was both challenging and rewarding,” said Aisha, one of the ensemble members. “We had to learn to really listen to each other, to be open to different ideas, and to trust in the creative process. But in the end, that’s what made the final product so special – it was a true reflection of our collective imagination and shared experiences.”
Bringing Social Issues to the Stage
For the student ensemble at Stanley Park High School, devised theatre provided a powerful platform to explore pressing social issues and give voice to underrepresented perspectives.
“We knew we wanted to create a piece that would challenge our audience and spark important conversations,” said Jada, the lead director of the project. “So we dove deep into research on topics like systemic racism, gender inequality, and environmental justice, and then worked together to find creative ways to bring those issues to life on stage.”
Through a series of workshops and improvisations, the ensemble developed a layered and thought-provoking performance that wove together multiple storylines and characters. The result was a production that not only entertained the audience but also compelled them to reflect on the social and political realities of our time.
“It was incredibly empowering to know that our work had the potential to make a real impact,” said Amir, one of the ensemble members. “We weren’t just putting on a show – we were using theatre as a tool for social change, to raise awareness and inspire action.”
The student-directed devised theatre performance was a resounding success, drawing praise from both the school community and local arts organizations. More importantly, it demonstrated the power of young people to become agents of change, using their creativity and imagination to tackle the complex issues facing our world.
Exploring the Boundaries of Theatrical Form
In their student-directed devised theatre performance, the ensemble at Stanley Park High School set out to push the boundaries of traditional theatre and explore new and innovative ways of storytelling.
“We were inspired by the work of artists like Phelim McDermott and Improbable, who use improvisation and non-linear narratives to create truly immersive theatrical experiences,” said Lila, one of the co-directors. “We wanted to see how far we could take that approach and create something that would truly captivate our audience.”
The ensemble embarked on an ambitious journey, experimenting with a range of theatrical forms and techniques, from promenade performance and site-specific staging to interactive installations and virtual reality elements.
“It was exhilarating and terrifying all at the same time,” recalled Aisha, one of the ensemble members. “We were constantly challenging ourselves to step outside our comfort zones, to try new things and take risks. But that’s where the real magic happened – when we let go of our preconceptions and allowed our imaginations to take over.”
The final result was a truly unique and boundary-pushing theatrical experience that left the audience awestruck and inspired. From the immersive, dreamlike quality of the opening sequence to the powerful and thought-provoking finale, the performance showcased the remarkable creativity and innovation of the student ensemble.
“This project has been a testament to the incredible potential of young people when they’re given the freedom and support to unleash their imaginations,” said Jada, the lead director. “I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished, and I can’t wait to see what the next generation of student-directed devised theatre will bring to the stage.”
