Unlocking the Richness of Queensland’s Multicultural Tapestry
Queensland is a vibrant and diverse state, home to people from all corners of the globe. From the tropical north to the lush hinterlands and bustling cities, the cultural heritage and traditions of Queensland’s multicultural communities are woven into the fabric of everyday life. The Celebrating Multicultural Queensland (CMQ) program plays a pivotal role in recognizing and celebrating this rich diversity, fostering unity, and building an inclusive and harmonious society.
Administered by Multicultural Affairs Queensland (MAQ), the CMQ program is an annual, open competitive grants program that provides funding for multicultural events across the state. These events aim to engage Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities, groups, and individuals, as well as the broader community, to partner and contribute to building an inclusive, harmonious, and united Queensland.
Embracing the Evolution: Outcomes-Based Grants
In 2024-25, the CMQ program is transitioning to an outcomes-based model, focusing on achieving specific, measurable outcomes and long-term impacts. This shift allows the program to better understand the real-world effects of the funded events and make informed decisions about future resource allocation.
For applicants, this new approach emphasizes the importance of identifying and measuring the outcomes of their initiatives. By focusing on tangible results, such as improved intercultural connections, new skills, or increased confidence, event organizers can better demonstrate the meaningful impact of their work. This evidence-based evaluation helps to communicate the value of their efforts and the positive changes they’re creating within the community.
Funding Opportunities and Eligibility
The CMQ program offers one-off funding of up to $20,000 for events and festivals to be delivered in the 2025 calendar year. These events must increase intercultural connections and social inclusion by bringing together the people of Queensland to build an inclusive, harmonious, and united community.
Eligible applicants for the CMQ program include:
- Incorporated not-for-profit organizations
- Incorporated community groups
- Local government authorities
- Educational institutions
- Registered charities
Applicants must be based in Queensland and have an active Australian Business Number (ABN). If an organization is not incorporated or does not have an active ABN, they can seek an eligible organization to auspice their application.
Diverse Event Possibilities
The CMQ program supports a wide range of multicultural events and festivals that celebrate the state’s rich cultural heritage. Some examples of the types of events the program has funded in the past include:
- Cultural festivals showcasing traditional music, dance, art, and cuisine
- Commemorative events celebrating significant cultural or religious observances
- Workshops, classes, and educational programs that promote cross-cultural learning and understanding
- Sporting and recreational activities that bring together people from diverse backgrounds
- Multicultural community gatherings and networking events
These events not only provide opportunities for CALD communities to share their traditions and customs but also encourage the broader community to engage, connect, and foster a sense of belonging.
The Impact of CMQ-Funded Events
The Celebrating Multicultural Queensland program has had a profound impact on communities across the state. By supporting a diverse array of events, the program has facilitated meaningful intercultural connections, promoted social inclusion, and celebrated the vibrant diversity that makes Queensland so unique.
One notable example is the Mount Isa Multicultural Festival, which has received funding through the CMQ program. This annual event brings together people from all walks of life to experience the sights, sounds, and flavors of the region’s diverse cultural tapestry. Through music, dance, and shared culinary experiences, attendees have the opportunity to learn about and appreciate the rich traditions of their neighbors.
Similarly, the Cairns Greek Festival and the Brisbane Chinese Festival, both funded by the CMQ program, have become much-anticipated events that showcase the vibrant cultural heritage of these communities. These festivals not only delight attendees with authentic performances and delicacies but also serve as a platform for cultural exchange and celebration.
Strengthening Multicultural Queensland
In addition to the Celebrating Multicultural Queensland program, the Queensland Government has also introduced the Strengthening Multicultural Queensland (SMQ) program. This new initiative provides funding for projects that address barriers and create opportunities for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, leading to more inclusive, resilient, and cohesive communities.
The SMQ program offers one-off funding of up to $100,000 for innovative and strategic projects that aim to break down the barriers facing young people from CALD backgrounds. These projects empower young people, enabling them to feel heard, valued, supported, and engaged within their communities.

The Celebrating Multicultural Queensland program is a powerful testament to the Queensland Government’s commitment to promoting unity, inclusivity, and the celebration of cultural diversity. Whether you’re a community organization, educational institution, or an individual interested in participating, there are numerous ways to get involved.
