“GIX offers interdisciplinary, project-based learning that blends engineering, business, and design,” says GIX Executive Director and CEO Sean Carr. “This is where students learn the skills to innovate and develop technology solutions, while also understanding users’ needs and bringing ideas to market.”

Central to GIX’s approach is its emphasis on hands-on, real-world learning. Students work on sponsored capstone projects, tackling complex challenges faced by tech companies, startups, nonprofits, and public agencies. These projects require them to develop and build new products, leveraging technology to generate solutions that address pressing business or societal needs.

“One of my favorite moments is when, at every table in the lab, four or five students are working on projects, and there is a buzz in the room,” says Linda Wagner, GIX’s Senior Academic Director. “Students are building things, sharing ideas, and helping each other. That’s GIX at its best.”

This immersive, collaborative environment not only prepares students for the realities of the modern workplace but also fosters the development of crucial skills like design thinking, entrepreneurship, and technology strategy.

The GIX program’s flagship offering is the Master of Science in Technology Innovation (MSTI), an 18-month, full-time graduate degree that equips students with the tools and knowledge to thrive in the rapidly evolving world of technology innovation. Drawing from a diverse pool of undergraduate majors and professional backgrounds, the MSTI program provides a cohesive, interdisciplinary learning experience.

“GIX is clearly at the forefront of advanced degree education,” says Dean of Engineering Nancy Allbritton. “Employers are increasingly seeking multifaceted talent, innovative thinkers who are as fluent in technological development and design as they are skilled in business analytics and marketing. GIX is tailored to train this new generation of cross-functional professionals.”

During the first year, students immerse themselves in GIX’s classrooms and labs, where they learn the fundamentals of design thinking, software design, hardware development, entrepreneurship, and technology strategy. In the second year, they apply these skills to real-world challenges, completing capstone projects with industry sponsors.

“GIX excels at interdisciplinary learning, the type of learning that is needed to tackle today’s real-world, unstructured problems,” explains Foster Dean Frank Hodge. “Such problems do not fit neatly into disciplinary silos. They require leading scholars to come together across disciplines to work in a cohesive partnership.”

This emphasis on cross-functional collaboration and hands-on, project-based learning sets GIX apart from traditional academic programs. By bridging the gap between academia and industry, GIX ensures that its graduates are uniquely equipped to navigate the complex and rapidly evolving challenges of the modern business landscape.

Cultivating a Global Mindset

Through partnerships with institutions like Tsinghua University in China, students can pursue dual-degree programs, earning an MS in Technology Innovation in Seattle and an MS in Engineering in Beijing.

“GIX transcends academic disciplines and geographic borders, offering students a global education and an international network,” says Carr.

For students seeking shorter but still robust international experiences, GIX offers two-week “Global Technology Experiences,” where they visit tech companies and innovation hubs around the world. Current destinations include Helsinki, where students focus on extended reality (XR) technologies and design, and Tokyo, which explores human-robot interaction.

These immersive global experiences not only broaden students’ perspectives but also provide them with invaluable networking opportunities and a deeper understanding of how innovation manifests in different cultural and economic contexts.

Driving Continuous Innovation

GIX’s interdisciplinary approach and global orientation are not limited to its degree programs. The institution also offers professional development opportunities for corporate teams, co-creating customized learning experiences that help businesses leverage new technologies for competitive advantage.

For example, GIX partnered with T-Mobile on a four-month program in which teams collaborated with UW faculty to conceive, develop, and prototype new products and services.
